Doddabetta is the highest peak in the Nilgiri Mountains, located in the southern part of India. It’s situated near the town of Ooty (Ootacamund) in the state of Tamil Nadu. Doddabetta stands at an elevation of about 2,637 meters (8,652 feet) above sea level, making it the highest point in the Nilgiri Hills and one of the highest peaks in the region.
The name “Doddabetta” translates to “big mountain” in the local Kannada language. The peak is a popular tourist destination, known for its stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Nilgiri Hills, Ooty town, and the neighboring states of Kerala and Karnataka.
There’s an observatory at the top of Doddabetta, managed by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. The observatory provides telescopic views of the surrounding areas and is a major attraction for visitors. The site is also home to a range of flora and fauna, typical of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot.
